Ask for impact before you ask for budget
On early B2B SaaS discovery calls, founders and AEs often jump from “what’s the pain?” straight to pricing. Buyers push back because the cost of inaction was never quantified — by them.
Use this sequence instead:
- Pause. Let the buyer invent the number — hours, missed pipeline, churn risk, compliance exposure.
- Mirror. “So roughly X hours a week / Y deals slipping — did I get that right?”
- Connect. Only then map your product. Budget becomes recovering a cost they named.
That one habit cleans up later “too expensive” objections — because price is framed against their impact estimate, not yours.
Filled example — Metriclane × Cobalt Labs
You (AE)
“Walk me through how activation gets tied to paid revenue today — rough is fine.”
Jordan
“Segment into the warehouse, Looker for most stuff, then RevOps owns a Friday sheet that joins events to opportunities. Two analysts and I touch it.”
You
“If that Friday process stayed the same for six more months, what would it cost in time, revenue, or risk?”
Jordan
“About six hours a week across the three of us. And the sheet is wrong maybe twice a month in the Monday forecast — CRO notices.”
You
“So roughly six hours a week, and wrong about twice a month in forecast — did I get that right?”
Jordan
“Yeah. That’s the annoying part.”
You · soft bridge
“Based on that — Friday joins costing about six hours a week and still surprising the CRO — teams like yours use Metriclane to expose activation→paid as an API on the warehouse. Before I show anything: does that direction match, or are we off?”
What happens next in the full kit: score the call (this one lands ~11/12 → Go), book a tech deep-dive with Head of Data, send a same-day 5-bullet recap, and keep the “too expensive” handler ready using Jordan’s six-hour number — not a discount reflex.
Metriclane / Cobalt Labs are teaching examples so you can see a complete fill-in. Replace with your product. Never invent proof you don’t have.
